"Music is a spiritual expression of what's in your heart. Music as a way of getting rich is a pretty new thing, and I often wonder if the mega-bucks glitzy atmosphere is making the quality of music suffer. You have to work really hard to get around that and remember why you're in it in the first place: because you have to be. It's like an addiction. You can't go a day without picking up your guitar. To me, the only commercial goals that are really valid are, 'Boy, I wish I didn't have to go to work. I wish I could do this all the time."

Bonnaroo 2004 DVD Review

posted 11:29 PM by the joker

It doesnt matter one bit if you were there in Tennessee last summer or not. This is a fantastic music DVD. It is beautifully shot, sounds great and the song selection is tops. Easily the best of the series. If you have some money available, you should own this today.

p.s. The Trey Anastasio Band version of "First Tube" with fireworks was one of the greatest moments of my tour last summer- and it is captured here as well.

Dear L Ron Hubbard,

posted 11:42 PM by the joker

So in the midst of all the freaks at the Boulder Creek Festival i sat down at a tent where i got a "free stress test". They made me hold thin cans that were hooked up to some sort of machine with a needle that would go left and right on it. I could see the needle move but they never told me what it meant when it moved. Then, this girl asked me a series of questions...my favorite was:

"What is ruining your life?"

...And I thought, well, having to actually work and pay bills not being able to travel around the country doing drugs and seeing a guy play guitar like a jedi (aka phish tour)...but thats not really ruining my life...but having those things happen is just life...and i said "what? nothing is ruining my life- but who has a perfect life without problems?"

so, i got handed a copy of Dianetics and told it could solve all my problems and John Travolta endorses it and blah blah...but i still dont know the results of my stress test, and i still havent read Dianetics.

Weekend Highlight Reel

posted 5:13 PM by the joker

a few things i observed this weekend:
1. Horseshoes can be fun, but T$ is hard to beat.
2. Star Wars Episode III is as good the second time as the first.
3. The Boulder Creek Festival has everything you would ever need to learn about health supplements, find a chiropractor, get a tarot card reading or learn about the lines on your palm, and definitely there are people there that can help you solve all of life's problems.
4. the band Kan'Nal totally sukks, unless you are really into wicca, spun out wookie chicks with fire, drum circles, or think that scott stapp from creed has a good voice.
5. The Boulder Creek festival was a lot of fun Saturday in the sun, but Sunday the rain put a damper on things.
6. Tarot card readings can be fun, but if the person doing the reading has to ask you if you are dating someone or not, what you do for a living, and where you are from, she PROBABLY isnt a very strong psychic.

Crazy Person of the Week

posted 9:59 PM by the joker

Boulder is a great town, and I love living here. I have been all over the country, and there is no where else I would rather be. One thing about this town, though, is that there are a lot of what I would consider kooky people. Every week I meet someone a little off, and it makes for a great story. That's the thing about crazy people in Boulder- they are harmless and make for a great laugh. A crazy person in another town- say, New York, for example- crazy isnt funny- Crazy wants to kill you.

Tonight I went to a "business leader networking event" (what the invitation said) at a local business. The business was a "healing center"...and they introduced me to a V.I.B.E. machine. Here is a picture and a description:

"The Vibrational Integrated Bio-Photonic Energizer (VIBE) machine is a technological breakthrough that enhances the human body by restoring the vibrational level of the body back to its natural, optimal state of being. Invented by Gene Koonce of Greeley, CO, it is based on the pioneering techniques of energy machines built in the early 1900s and the use of AC (alternating current) power.

The VIBE transmits energy at the frequency of healthy cells, and the body then resonates to this frequency like a tuning fork allowing the body to heal itself. The biophotons or light emitted improves the body's communication system. Raising the oscillating frequency of every atom in the body strengthens the immune system and eliminatese V the negative toxins the body is fighting. The quantum fluctuations or vibrations in the cells start creating new and different "memories" as the cell frequency is reprogrammed back to its original, natural state. This enhances the body?s ability to protect itself from harmful physical and environmental substances."

So, I sat in front of the machine and now my cells are operating at the correct frequency. Personally, I dont know if there is any truth or really any harm to using this machine or not...I believe that our minds are the most powerful tool we have- if someone sits in front of this machine every day and thinks that they are being healed, well, they probably are- we create our own realities are in control of it.

I will go on the record and say that this machine and all of the talk is a little crazy to me- hence the crazy person of the week. Gotta love Boulder.

Cars, Trucks, Buses> Mountains in the Mist> Drifting> Drowned

posted 9:11 PM by the joker

An eventful weekend...the summary:

Cars, Trucks, Buses
Fri night I went down to Denver to spend some time with The Power of the Brown and his crew. Our buddy Ricardo had an idea- rent a 30 foot RV and drive it to dive bars outside of Denver. So that is what we did. We had a designated driver and a cooler full of beers and we were on our way. I do love a good trip down the highway in an RV. I had set a goal at the beginning of the evening to get a couple of girls to come back to the RV with us and party, but alas, no asks=no sales. Despite my failure we returned home safely to Brown?s apartment properly sauced and the RV was in one piece.

A few hours later, I experienced the low part of the weekend- waking up with a hangover and stuck to Brown's leather couch.

Mountains in the Mist
After making a recovery from the night before I joined a new group of friends at Boulder?s famed Chautauqua Park for some volleyball, brats, and brew. It was really a good time, Colorado is beautiful this time of year and the weather is perfect.

Drifting>Drowned
Sunday afternoon I headed out with R$, T$, and PlayaHata to do some rafting at Poudre Canyon, outside of Ft. Collins. R$ and PlayaHata are experienced rafters and were in their kayaks, while T$ and I shared a raft. The water is high right now and moving fast. It was a perfect day today for some time on the river, for sure.

All was going well until T$ and I hit some rough rapids and I fell out of the raft. When I fell out I thought it was kinda funny initially. Im a pretty good swimmer, but unfortunately I got caught in the current and got into a hole. On the river it can be dangerous, and for about 60 seconds I thought I might be meeting the maker. The current was pulling me down and back against a big rock, and I swallowed a bit of water before I was able to somehow get out of the current and get some air. I would say I was caught underwater 3 or 4 times for more than 10 seconds. Scary stuff. Somehow I was able to get out of the hole pulling me down, but it took a lot out of me. I floated down the river for a bit and was able to swim to shore. I was white as a ghost, cold, and throwing up. After a few minutes and some deep breaths, I was able to make a recovery and finish out the day. Through all of the swimming and struggle, amazingly I kept a hand on my beloved Simpsons hat. Good times in Colorado when you can nearly drown and then get back in the raft and still enjoy yourself. Hope you enjoy the pictures...

"Good relations with Wookies I have"

posted 10:53 PM by the joker

I believe that on this night, May 19, 2005, with the screening of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, followed up by watching The O.C. on TiVo, is surely the greatest Television/Movie combination I have ever experienced in my life.

Back in the saddle

posted 10:37 PM by the joker

Ok, im back in the blogging game.

Here is an update on my current status:

Name: the joker
Occupation: stockbroker/financial genius
Location: boulder, colo-fucking-rado
Thing that consumes most of my time: work
Relationship status: hopelessly single, not really looking, lusting after college girls
Living situation: House in south boulder, 3 roommates, 2 dogs, ghost of kitty
Ride: Honda element, aka Marco Esquandolas
Looking forward to: shows at red rocks this summer

So honestly, I have a lot of material, but I don't know if I have the time to write about all of it at once. So I am going to set the goal of writing 16 posts a month and be somewhat consistent. Slow and steady wins the race. I hope you like what you read and come back often. Much thanks to my buddy Pauly for inspiring me to get back in the game and get off the bench.
