Yesterday afternoon, without even a single rumor in the community, Trey Anastasio, guitarist and leader of Phish announced that they would be breaking up after their upcoming summer tour. Their last show will be a festival in Vermont in August.
Many people are very upset about this, but I seem to have a completely different outlook than many of the others that I talk to or read their posts on the Internet.
I feel very lucky to have seen them 8 times and have the memories that I have from those shows. Last summer I got to see them at The Gorge in Washington St, which was one of the most beautiful and fun concert trips I have ever had. Many other people I know have gotten to go on tour with the band- something that I have always wanted to do but never had the balls or opportunity to do, until now. I feel very lucky that I am going to see them 8 times this summer, and possibly go to their last festival in August. If everything has to come to an end somehow, then this is a great way to end it. I am very excited for the shows and tour this summer, it will be a special time indeed.
For me, 2004 is a great year of change- I am moving, friends are moving, friends are getting married, having children, we might even have a new President...and now my favorite band that has a whole culture wrapped around it is ending for good. What could be more perfect in this year? 2004 is the year for things like this. Some change is horrible- but this, an end of an era with a band at the top of their game, is a good thing. It is time to move on. I feel good and at peace about it.
Pauly wrote a great post about the breakup on
his blog. Read it if you are interested...I enjoyed it.

I took a hiatus/roadtrip in the Summer of 2001. I spent time in most of the Western States and drove to Seattle and back from Dallas over a 2 month time period. Here are some poems/song lyrics. I think one time they had music to them, but all I have now is the words. I am startled how relevant they still are to me today. It seems like I am still thinking about a lot of the things I wrote about as I prepare for another summer hiatus and road trip.

I dont feel bad about what I have done.
I tried something new, found out where others came from.
I wasnt looking for it, it just happened.
and I didnt stop it.
Look into my eyes
Believe what I say.
Who are you to judge or make faces?
You need to live more before you will know.
The road traveled was filled with gold
I stuffed my pockets, i filled my cup
There will be no regrets, no worries when I am old.
Where am i going? What is my plan?
Why do I need to know?
Why do I need your approval?
Live your own life, stop worrying about mine.
Ambition makes me unhappy, and now
I am free.

Everything can work out
With a smile, a credit card, and a car.
Drive to find adventure
it is looking for you
if you let yourself see it.
I am trying to find my way
some say it is in black and white.
I see gray
You, you think you KNOW
You believe the papers
and ones you have never met
But I tell you, I lived it
and I havent made up my mind yet.

Which side are you on?
How long is your hair?
Have you let your career drive you mad?
Dont let the money
Take your smile away.
Is this all there is?
This is not the
American Dream.
These halls of computers and cubes
Lie
and Cheat
and Steal your soul!
When you are rich and empty
I will be smiling and laugh
Because I took the road
That really let me live.
2 months can be so short
If you check your e-mail every day.
But a day free in the mountains
Can be a year of play.
Im so glad I lived
Tried something new
I made my riches in living life
I hope I never forget.

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."
-Henry David Thoreau
This is a quote that is on a card that was given to me today by my office. I think its the first thing office-related that I have ever received (birthdays, Christmas wishes, anniversary parties, etc.) that I have thought VERY appropriate and have appreciated.

Today I feel unmotivated and unfocused. Ever have one of these days? I have tons to do at work; My apartment lease is up in two weeks and I need to find a new place as well as a roommate; I need to figure out my career path because I'm in a dead end job right now, and I'm getting ready to turn 30. Lots of stuff on the brain, but I can't concentrate nor do I care today. All I know is that it's 11:34 AM and I'm hungry for lunch.
It's been a while since I posted anything on Bathtub Gin. Here's a few quick notes/thoughts:
- I tried to buy tix for Wilco's Vic show this morning but it sold out in less than a minute. I'm not exaggerating either. I went to ticketmaster.com and was able to immediately get through at 10 AM but tix were already gone. I'm in awe.
- The Pixies SOLD OUT (4) shows at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. I was stupid to think that they wouldn't sell out one show at this venue. It's a pretty big place that holds roughly 5000 people. Other than London we're the only city on the tour with this many shows.
- Another Pixies related note, I was surprised to learn they're playing my hometown of Columbia, Missouri.
- I caught the "Aussie Invasion" Tour at the Vic a while back. Living End was awesome. Jet were pretty good. The Vines...how shall I say this...I've seen roughly 245 concerts in my 29 years of existance and this particular Vines performance ranks in the Top 3
worst shows I've ever seen. The lead singer is SO FUCKING ANNOYING. I have no idea how the rest of the band puts up with him. On a positive note I didn't have to pay for my ticket.
- Neil is turning into a cliche Phish nut. No more Phish or jam band references PLEASE. (Yawn)
- Where's Joni Hart these days? It seems she's missing in action.
- I was totally excited about seeing Velvet Revolver at the Riviera, but the show SOLD OUT in minutes.
That's all I have for today. I hope everyone's having a good one. Cheers!

Last night I bought a new car...drum roll...
2003 Honda Element EX 4WD. i was kinda unsure about the looks, but they have grown on me. I actually like that I get an opinion from people. Some people think its really cool, some people think they are the ugliest cars on the road. I like the way it looks and it stands out- its much cooler than owning a 4runner or Xterra like EVERYONE else. Besides, people tell me all the time that Phish sukks, and I dont listen to them, so why should i listen to anyone else about my car? I like it.
If you have never been in one, you seriously need to check it out. The inside functionality really sold me. Its the perfect camping/roadtrip car, has an amazing sound system, is awesome for mountain biking or getting to the slopes, plus it has the Honda engine which will run forever and gets good gas mileage.
It is boxy, but at least it gives you a taste in your mouth rather than just another car. I would much rather stand out than go with the flow.
Coachella- I'm glad I went, but i'll never go back again. There were too many hassles in the campsites and too many rules at the venue for my taste. I think that if you ever go, you should get a hotel in Palm Springs. I had fun, but it was really really hot (over 100 degrees both days) and there were a lot of rules inside the festival that were bad, too- no ins and outs, restricted drinking areas, and you couldnt bring water inside the venue. Plus, we couldn't even drink in the campsites and parking was a hassle…the list goes on. Im glad i went, I had lots of fun meeting new friends and rolling w/my box set, but i learned my lesson- never go to a festival in the desert.
Music/Shows wise, Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips in the bubble was a definite highlight- if you havent heard about it, here is a pic:
I thought Radiohead was good (as always) and I also enjoyed Muse, Electric Six, and Sage Francis. (check out this link
http://www.thedesertsun.com/coachella/ ) but I thought most everyone else i saw was a little flat. its too bad, really, cause on paper it looked great. Maybe I have a bad attitude, but it wasn’t as good as i thought it could have been. I guess its tough no matter what happens when its that hot.
Looking forward to Bonnaroo next month...May is going to go by fast- I walk across the Graduation stage May 15.
