"Music is a spiritual expression of what's in your heart. Music as a way of getting rich is a pretty new thing, and I often wonder if the mega-bucks glitzy atmosphere is making the quality of music suffer. You have to work really hard to get around that and remember why you're in it in the first place: because you have to be. It's like an addiction. You can't go a day without picking up your guitar. To me, the only commercial goals that are really valid are, 'Boy, I wish I didn't have to go to work. I wish I could do this all the time."

Dude looks like a lady

posted 1:08 PM by the joker

Tonight I am flying to Boston to visit The Alberts of Massachusetts, who are dear dear friends of mine. Halloween is one of our favorite times of the year, without a doubt.

Tomorrow night my costume will be...drum roll please...

A green dress, a blonde wig, a pearl necklace, lots of makeup and a stuffed bra.

Thats right, folks! The Joker is going to be a drag queen diva this Halloween. Pictures will be posted and the chances of future political careers will be forever forsaken.

Hope everyone out there has a great time trick-or-treating!

They are all nice, but there is one there that goes out of her way to flirt with me. Im not at all interested in starbucks girl, but i secretly like the attention and keep going back.

I broke the gate

posted 11:26 AM by the joker

My office building has a parking garage adjacent to it that I park in every day. To keep the non-corporate whores away from parking there, the garage is equipped with a magnetic pass key system and wooden gate. The gate is actually a little arm that goes up and down to let cars in and out.

This morning, the gate closed too early and came down on the top of my car as I was driving though. It caught on something on the top of my car- probably the plastic roof rack- and broke off. I BROKE THE GATE! There is not even a scratch on my vehicle.

Damn, that felt good.

CURSES!

posted 8:58 AM by Anonymous

Well, it's over. The Cubs aren't going to the World Series. I caught part of the game at Second City during a bathroom break from my writing class and watched the rest at home. I wasn't as upset/frustrated as I imagined I would be. I did in fact walk over to Wrigley Field after the game to observe the aftermath. It was complete chaos! Every street around the stadium (4-5 blocks in each direction) was roadblocked and there were thousands of Cubs fans walking everywhere. Most were drunk as usual. Along with the fans there were tons of cops. They were probably there in case the city decided to rage after the game. Let me tell you about Cubs fans...They are not typically angry. They might get pissy for a few minutes, but they drink an Old Style beer and move on. Losing is nothing new to Cubs' fans. Cubs fans typically drink a lot too. Lose, drink and be merry is their motto.

Things I saw outside the stadium last night:
- Drunk fans yelling all sorts of messages. Examples: "Fuck the Marlins!" "We eat fish!" "Fuck the Cubs!"
- A Mexican dude wearing a blue sombrero with a Cubs' "C" on it.
- A Storm Trooper wearing a Cubs sticker.
- Cops, Cops and Cops. At one point there were 24 cops on horses and about 50 cops wearing riot gear (helmets and tear gas guns) walking in line formations to push the crowd off the streets.
- T-shirt vendors making a shitload of cash.
- A drunk fan wearing a Bears jersey and waving a Cubs flag...Walking directly behind the Cop formations.

As for the fan who caught the ball on Monday night, I feel sorry for the guy. The city of Chicago knows his name, address, place of work and social security number. Apparently a Holiday Inn in Florida contacted him yesterday to offer him a month-long complimentary stay.

This is CheezLog reporting from Chicago. Over and out.

Crushed

posted 8:43 AM by Anonymous

What the hell happened to the Cubs last night?

The CheezLog left the Mars Volta show early to come home and watch the rest of the Cubs game. After seeing the score at the beginning of the 8th inning, the Log and his roommate put their jackets on, drank a beer in honor of the assumed victory and prepared to make their way to Wrigley Stadium (an 8-10 minute walk). That's when it all went down. Within 10-15 minutes the Marlins scored 8 runs. For the rest of the inning I sat on the couch (beer in hand), gaping in awe and thinking, "What the hell just happened?!" It's one of the strangest things I've ever witnessed.

I don't feel optimistic about tonight's final game. If there was a time to win it was last night. The pressure is on.

Input Needed

posted 1:17 PM by Anonymous

I'm currently trying to decide what to do tonight. Here's my dilemma. I have tickets to see Mars Volta tonight at the Riviera Theatre AND the Cubs are playing tonight. If I attend the concert and the Cubs win I'll never forgive myself. If I watch the Cubs game and they lose I will regret not seeing Mars Volta.

Lets take a poll.

What should CheezLog do?
a. Attend the Mars Volta concert.
b. Watch the Cubs game.
c. Attend the Mars Volta show and leave early.

The decision is up to you.

Cubs Game Today

posted 1:31 PM by Anonymous

The Cubs game starts in roughly 1 hour. If we win we'll clinch the National League title and head to the World Series. Everyone keep your fingers crossed. This is an important game.

I'd also like to give props to the Missouri Tigers for defeating the Nebraska Corn Huskers yesterday. I'm a huge Mizzou fan and this was a BIG win. The Tigers haven't beaten Nebraska at home in 30 years. Further, we haven't defeated a Top 10 team in 40 years! I realize this makes us sound pathetic, but don't diss the Tigers.

State of the Blogger Address

posted 3:27 PM by the joker

i am getting tired of with the drinking/going out thing. i feel like i have tons of "friends", more like acquaintances, to talk to at a bar but nothing important to talk about. need deeper relationship(s). i wake up many mornings feeling empty. definitely feeling like i need a woman's touch in my life, but wont settle for one that isnt right. often times wonder what is right, if ive already passed it up. miss old friends. i love going out, being active, hearing music, dancing, but want more meaning. work and school seem unfulfilling also.

tonight and tomorrow night polo sport is playing at club dada, which is in deep ellum and will probably be packed with TX/OU people. could be fun if i get really high and drunk, which i sometimes feel like i want to do and other times wonder what im doing. i just got an invitation to watch the TX/OU game and drink all day...i dont know if ill find something more fun/worthwile to do than go to that. world seems to revolve around being drunk. is never ending cycle. have crushes on people far away. wonder if that is healthy.

other than that, there is a lot i want to accomplish. perhaps as a result of being busy all the time i have the many thin relationships. seems that in the past solid relationships were built by spending quality time together and doing things, now it seems too busy for any of it. seems there is always something i need to do and dont get to do. i need to study. i need some time alone to think. i need to call my mom more. i need to exercise. would probably be a good idea to go to yoga class too. many times i wonder what i do with the moments that i do have and all i think about is the things i need to do.

am looking forward to halloween. going to boston to visit old friends. will dress in drag for the first time. i should probably also try to go dress shopping, maybe ill take my digital camera with me and post you some pics of dresses i try on.

Saw moe. last night at the Gypsy Tea Room. Loved the show. Lots of spacy jams. I thought that the rhythm section was on fire last night- percussion, drums, bass. Bad ass basslines all night long. Moe. seems to have found their sound and are sticking to it, and are really solid with segues. They don't take a lot of chances or aren't as varied as Phish, but keep the groove going really well. They brought their own lights and were a nice touch too.

There were a lot of people out last night- lots of frat daddies and there were some lost sorority girls in the crowd. I say lost because they were too pretty to be at a dirty jam band show. Seemed like sometimes the sorority girls confused a noodle dance with a stripper dance. But i digress.

Before i went out to moe, bongo juarez, polo sport guitar and I played some funk. The practice went great, but I dont play bass enough and my fingers get worked over. I have a blister on the end of one of my fingers and it kinda hurts to type. But polo sport guitar is so good- its just fun to be around so much talent. His band is playing tonight and tomorrow night, i might go see them. Its a big weekend in dallas- Texas vs. Oklahoma- the town gets crazy.

Go Cubs!!

posted 10:58 AM by Anonymous

Yesterday was a full day for the city of Chicago...

-Sting played in front of 45,000 fans in Grant Park.
-Robert Downey Jr. was in town to be honored for a Career Achievement Award at the Music Box Theater.
-The National League Championship Series began: Cubs vs. Marlins. Jimmy Buffett sang during 7th inning stretch.

It’s an exciting time to be living in Chicago. For the first time in 95 years, the Cubs are competing for the National League Championship. Thousands of fans have been roaming the streets outside the stadium for the last few days in celebration of the Cubs post-season wins.

From a local newspaper: “Outside a mile-long parade of honking motorists responded to the walking, hopping hordes, with passengers hanging out open windows to smack hands with strangers. A hundred or more Chicago police officers formed walls along sidewalks keeping pedestrians out of intersections.”

The CheezLog sez: Go Cubs!!

Didnt see the drumline, but got another show yo-yo-yo!

posted 11:37 AM by the joker

Saturday night I attended the Texas State Fair with my good friends W&S. We did not realize that the Prairie View A&M vs. Grambling St. football game was going on at the Cotton Bowl until we got out there. After halftime, everyone left the game and we were 3 very white people in a sea of hip-hoppers. It was quite an interesting people watching experience- there were some scantily clad hoochie mommas with ghetto booty that were, um, eyebrow raising.

All I did at the fair was eat and drink beer, I didn’t ride any rides. The last thing I ate was a deep fried twinkie, and I think it sent me over the edge into feeling gross nasty gross. The deep fried twinkie had a strange texture to it- instead of being crispy on the outside, it basicially is like this warm donut dough thing that sort of tastes like a twinkie. I guess there is a reason some things are only sold at the fair.

After the game we saw School of Rock. Bathtub Gin gives thumbs way up to this movie. Jack Black is great, but the kids are the ones that really steal the show. They can all actually play their instruments, and the characters of the kids are just loveable and hilarous. Good stuff.

Review: Live From Bonnaroo 2003

Of course you know that I am going to like this, because it brings flashbacks of dancing and staying up all night and wearing ridiculous costumes. Live From Bonnaroo 2003 is good, but some of my favorite moments aren't included. There just isn't a way to get 20+ artists to have their best moment from the festival on 2 discs, because sometimes that best song from their set lasted 15 or 20 minutes.

I am obsessed with the Mediski Martin and Wood track on here, and I would characterize most of the selections on this disc as "soild". Definitely a great way to expose yourself to a variety of music. Notably absent is Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Particle, and Moe...maybe there will be a Vol.2 or they will be featured on the upcoming DVD.

My hope is that the hipsters that buy this disc for the Polyphonic Spree or the Flaming Lips will take the time to listen to the rest of the disc with an open mind- it really is ok to like it all. I promise.
