"British rock singer Robert Palmer, whose smart suits and laconic style set the tone for much of the 1980s pop scene, died in Paris of a heart attack early Friday, his record company said. He was 54."
Cheers to you Robert Palmer! Thanks for the great videos and songs.

have you ever bought a concert ticket in advance and on the day of the show didn't feel in the mood to attend? that was me last night. you could have taken me back in time to a led zeppelin concert in 1971 and i would feel the same way. my mind was elsewhere. therefore, i struggled to connect with the show and artist.
getting back to my short review. last night i saw damien rice at park west. i bought my ticket months ago based on a friend's opinion. cameron, my friend, saw damien perform at an industry event in boulder, colorado and thought he was amazing. with that i was sold. i logged on to ticketmaster.com and purchased a ticket. nuff said.
for those not familiar with damien, he's an irishman. his music is soft, mostly acoustic and heavy. i finally picked up his disc last weekend and wasn't impressed with my first listen. i never trust a first listen though. music typically grows on me.
the all ages show began at roughly 8 pm and concluded at 10 pm. i felt it was a good show, but it didn't dazzle me. i grew tired of him using the microphone that distorts his voice. why use it? he has a pretty voice and doesn't need it. some of the extended jams reminded me of dave matthew live. don't get me wrong, this wasn't a bad show. damien was actually very solid. i would definitely recommend checking him out if/when he comes to your town.
i'm undecided what i think of damien. he's received a lot of attention in the press and on vh1 lately. in addition, last night's crowd seems to think he's the next big thing.
i don't know.

On the posters for the
Austin City Limits music festival it advertises "15 acres of music." I didn't understand the full significance of that, but I do now. Damn my feet hurt. I must have walked 50 miles this weekend. But it was worth it. I went down there by myself and met up with different groups of friends each day. It was easier that way, but I must admit I felt a little weird going on the trip to the motel solo.
Friday I saw Topaz, Particle, a little bit of Steve Earle, The Charlie Hunter Trio, Galactic, Martin Sexton, Steve Winwood, and Spoon. Particle played past their allotted time and the PA was shut off- but they didn?t care- they kept on jamming for another 4-5 minutes and all you could hear were the instruments from the stage. Galactic was another highlight, but it seemed like they played a lot of Houseman songs. I prefer it when they just get up there and jam. It seemed like on Friday all the bands I saw did a very predictable set...solid, but predictable.
All day Friday I carried around the "I Am Happy" "Thank You" sign. It made a couple of group meet-ups much easier, and it seemed to make everyone smile. People got a real kick out of it, and I had a few interesting conversations and compliments. Even had my picture taken by some admirers, but alas, no phone numbers where exchanged. After Steve Winwood, I was walking with some friends and this scruffy-looking guy runs up to me:
Scruffy-looking guy: Hey man, you remember me?!?!?
Me: yeah, I think so?
Scruffy-looking guy: That?s right- Im the guy that parked your car this morning at the parking lot!
Me: Yeah..I remember?is it still there?
Scruffy-looking guy: Aww, Yeah man, don?t worry about that! Heh Heh Heh. I just saw your sign and wanted to say hi!
Me: Oh. Ok, cool. Have a great day.
Scruffy-looking guy: Cool, Have a great day, Dude!
Friday night I headed over to see my buddy's band play at Ego's. Ego's is a little bar that is in an apartment complex and is small, smoky and dark. Definitely a unique place. After having a couple of drinks at Ego's I felt my second wind coming on and decided to try and find the Topaz late night show that was to start aroud 1-1:30am. When I arrived at the Topaz show, there weren?t many people there, but when I was getting a drink at the bar a Frat-daddy looking guy asks: "Hey dude, you wanna take a shot?"
"Sure, why not"
"You ever had Sex with an alligator?"
"No, cant say I have."
"Well, now?s your chance. 3 shots, please."
I was somehow included in the shot purchases by this guy 4 times. He even found me in the club a couple of times cause "my buddy doesnt want to do shots with me- hes scared ckicken-shit." Quite the character- he had a camera phone and after a few drinks with him showed me pictures of his pot plants growing at home as well as a recent party with long lines of coke. I made sure to leave before he closed out his tab.
On Saturday the sky was cloudy when I woke up and it ended up raining most of the afternoon. I say rain, but it was really more like a light drizzle. It was actually pretty nice and things were nice and cool. Sat afternoon I saw the South Austin Jug Band, Old 97's, Dandy Warhols, The Tribute to Johnny Cash (Johnny Cash songs sung by Old 97's, Drive By Truckers, and N. Mississippi All-Stars, pretty cool), some of the Drive by Truckers, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and the first set of String Cheese Incident. The South Austin Jug Band kicked ass- they did a bluegrass version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" that was absolute genius- they played each section by moving around the band- fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and standup bass.
At some point on Saturday afternoon the drizzle was taking its toll on the "I Am Happy" sign and I was getting tired of lugging it around everywhere. I decided to place it up against a bench and watch to see if something happened. After about 10 minutes a woman came up and took the sign and showed her friends what she had found. I just watched them walk off and laughed.
The last band of the evening, String Cheese Incident, I keep on trying to convince myself that I like them, but they seem to just kinda bore me. I left after the first set of String Cheese and missed their flying pig- in the second set they played some Pink Floyd and flew a huge inflatable pig through the crowd. Im sorry I missed that but for me, String Cheese is snoresville.
After the fest I went back to the motel and took a much needed nap, and then headed down to Stubbs to catch Garage a Trois around midnight. Stanton Moore and Charlie Hunter kicked major ass- funky jazz all night long. After Garage a Trois I headed down to the late night Particle rave happening at the Vibe- I slipped in without paying a cover, danced for an hour, then felt I was sober enough to drive again and headed home about 3:30am. I saw a friend the next day that was at the show and he said they left at 5:45 and Particle was just starting their 3rd set...i didnt have enough drugs in me to make it all night. Probably a good thing.
Sunday was probably my favorite day of the three. It started out rainy like Saturday, but by about 3pm it was just cool and nice. I spent the whole day with the same people and we saw Bob Schneider, Soulive, G. Love and Special Sauce, The Polyphonic Spree, a little of Ben Kweller, Yo La Tengo, Jack Johnson, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Ween, Ben Harper, Yonder Mountain String Band, a little of Beth Orton, and R.E.M. I don?t think anything crazy happened on Sunday, but everything I saw was very solid. R.E.M. played "Fall on Me" and "Nightswimming", so I was happy.
One thing that I thought about as I was looking at the schedule and seeing the bands was how few of them were radio bands. I thought it was nice and a big message from Austin, where the whole town clamors against anything big and corporate. It was like Austin was celebrating their own local artists and then trying to shout to the rest of the nation: "Hey, look, you can do a great festival with good bands and people will come out and had fun." I hope they continue the tradition, and maybe Ill make it down there again next year.

i caught wilco at chicago's auditorium theatre last night. one word: solid.
the band played two sold out nights to a hometown crowd at auditorium theatre to conclude their two year "yankee hotel foxtrot" tour. the venue was magnificent! it reminded me of radio city music hall to some degree. seats were reserved which was different from past wilco shows i've attended. the atmosphere was very different as well. the band usually plays the riviera theatre which is smaller, allows smoking and is general admission. last night's show felt more formal and upscale.
regardless, the band greeted the audience wearing suits and ties and played 2+ hours of material. they sounded tight and the acoustics were stellar. after 3 encores jeff tweedy thanked their crew, fans and announced they will be taking a break until election time.
setlist:
Misunderstood / How To Fight Loneliness / Handshake Drugs / She's a Jar / Remember the Mountain Bed / Magazine Called Sunset / I'm Always In Love / At Least That's What You Said / Pieholden Suite / Box Full of Letters / Kingpin / I'm the Man Who Loves You / Poor Places / Reservations / War On War / Cars Can't Escape / Kicking Television //
Encore 1: I Am Trying To Break Your Heart / Pot Kettle Black / Jesus, etc. //
Encore 2: Late Greats / Airline To Heaven / California Stars / Forget the Flowers / New Madrid / Hoodoo Voodoo / Casino Queen / Monday / We've Been Had / Say You Miss Me

I Am Happy! Thank You!
Im super pumped today cause tonight after work i am heading south for Austin. I think this weekend at the
Austin City Limits Music Festival is going to be great- tons of bands, weather in the 70's, and lots of friends going to the festival. I am especially proud of my sign i made- it should make it easier to meet up with friends in the crowd and spread the good vibe- on one side it says "I Am Happy!" and the other says "Thank You!"...it looks like a first grader made it and is all multi-colored hippie greatness. The "T" in Thank You even looks like a mushroom. oh, im so fukkin creative sometimes!

Love, is a burning flame...
Seems like this weekend everywhere I went there was a tribute to Johnny Cash. I was playing his music, Windowsill Wendy, The Boy and I watched a VH1 Storytellers,
Polo Sport did a rendition of "Ring of Fire" Saturday night, and even my neighbors got into it on Sunday, blaring his greatest hits all afternoon. Right on.
I saw
Once upon a time in Mexico this weekend and thought it sukked. I liked
Desperado, but this movie seemed really choppy and unbalanced. Antonio, Salma, and Mr. Depp all looked great, but I didn't care for the movie as a whole. There were ridiculous fight scenes that took everything that is bad about the Charlies Angels fight scenes and nothing that is good about using stunts. The story and dialogue was funny and clever at parts, but it always seemed like the next scene ruined the one before. I am starting to believe that filmmaking and storytelling is a lost art. Watching the movie this weekend I could tell that tons of money was spent on sets and stunts and big name actor salaries...but the money would be much better spent on some more writers and developing some talent on the direction side. Just because we went to see the movie doesn't mean that it was good...Hollywood, wake up. If I wasn't with a big group of people, I would have walked out about 40 minutes into it.

Its pretty much a guarantee that not a damn thing is going to be done work-wise on a rainy Friday afternoon. Or any Friday afternoon for that matter.
This weekend there are bands playing and friends will be on stage, but I somehow feel uninspired to see them. But maybe that?s because the drugs haven?t taken hold yet. Give em an hour?right? Haha.

I must say that I am getting damn good at doing nothing on the weekends. Fri night I saw a friend’s band play- it was their “CD Release Party” and Sat night I went to a Birthday party, but other than those outings I sat around the house or by the pool and read.
Friday night one of my classes met- the class normally meets on Monday nights -we had to make up the class because of Labor day. It was one of the most interesting classes I have attended- I wish everyone could have heard this lecture. It was all about world economic policy since World War II- about the relationships between Japan, the US, and Germany- and it was done without a political slant. Very, very interesting. Enlightening, in fact. I would explain it all to you, but
1. It would take all day to read and
2. I’m not sure that you guys would be interested. But now i feel like i have a better understanding of what is
really going on, and that feels great.
Is it just me, or is 2003 kinda a lame year in new music? I havent bought anything good in months that has been new. Maybe its because I have had my head in a lot of jam band music, but it doesn’t seem like there are very many must own records out there that have come out recently. Sure, there are some new records by some old standbys, but im looking for something new. Suggestions…???

Joker, what is your opinion on Football Season?
Well, football season has begun. And I could really care less. Maybe it is because I got my undergrad from Baylor, and now im at Grad School at Southern Methodist University. Great schools, but HORRIBLE football teams. And then there are the Dallas Cowboys. Yawn.
I guess all there is to do is wait for the end of November for the bandwagon to roll around and pick one to jump on.

The Times, They are A-Changin’
Not literally. But I can feel fall coming on, and it feels good.
Not that summer has been bad. Summer and I have had quite an affair. But I am ready to move on. This weekend it rained, temperatures were cooler, and something in me tells me that changes are coming. Not only a new season, but a new season in my life somehow. I can feel it. Maybe its because it is about 25 degrees cooler than it was last week. Maybe I have changed somehow- I have already, I think- but it is hard to describe. Some people don’t like change. I look for it.
Yesterday afternoon I had the most awesome jam session I had had in memory. My roommate Bongo Juarez was on drums, I mostly played bass, and the guitar player/band leader of a dallas band ill call
Polo Sport played guitar. I wish I had a recording of it all. We funked it up for about 3 hours. I have been playing a lot of bass recently (im really a guitarist), and though I don’t think I am very good, I seem to know how to lay down the fat funk groove, and I love it. I have no idea where it comes from, but all I can say is “Thank you funky fingers, you make my booty shake and my ears so happy.” Actually, my fingers hurt today as I am tying this, because they are not used to the fat strings of the bass for such a long time and the ferocious pace of the jams. But I cant wait to do it again.
I feel like I am validated, because the guys in polo sport have quit their jobs and are making it as full-time touring musicians. They have played with bands like Particle and The Big Wu, and the only way to describe it is its like I have always thought I am good, but after actually playing with someone that is doing it for a living I now know that I can hang with the big boys. Plus, in a Kevin Bacon/Friendster kinda way, now I am linked to tons of musicians…I have jammed w/polo sport, polo sport jammed w/particle, particle jammed w/galactic, galactic jammed w/widespread panic/w/phish/w/les claypool/w/carlos santana…it goes on forever.
